Pathfinder Initiative
Accelerating a durable and sustainable global carbon market
Our Goal: To accelerate a durable and sustainable demand-side for the global carbon market, ensuring its long-term stability, capacity for energy equity, and effectiveness as a tool to mitigate the effects of climate change.
The Challenge: While progress has been made to standardize and monitor carbon credit verification, the supply-side work is being undermined by an impending market imbalance. The global carbon market is rapidly becoming a buyers’ market, where a surplus of projects and credits gives buyers disproportionate leverage to control and drive down prices. This dynamic risks devaluing high-quality projects, limiting future investment, and slowing progress toward addressing climate change.
The Focus: Pathfinder focuses on organizing supply, rather than verifying it. The initiative directly addresses market imbalance by empowering sellers. The Initiative seeks to develop a framework for a collaborative, seller-side trading bloc (potentially in the form of regional blocs) to ensure fairness, stability, and longevity for the carbon market.
By enabling seller nations to coordinate this structure will:
Prevent a Race to the Bottom: Remove undercutting that devalues credits
Create Fair Valuation: Collectively manage the quantity, quality, and price of carbon credits to reflect their true environmental and social value accurately
Promote Equitable Development: Ensure that revenue is distributed equitably to fund sustainable development and to improve the quality of life in participating nations.
Build Market Confidence: Create a predictable market that incentivizes long-term participation from buyers and sellers.
