Tackling the Biggest Unaddressed Hurtle to Space Industrialization in 2025

For over three decades, the Space Frontier Foundation has moved the needle in making humanity’s future in space a reality. Today, we see that commercial space capabilities have leapt ahead—launch costs have dropped and orbital infrastructure has multiplied—yet the world outside the “traditional” space sector often still views space as science fiction or nation-state domain. Many industries and the public at large remain stuck in a 1980s mindset, when space was seen as too costly, too technical, or simply too distant to help solve real-world problems. Our work bridges this gap by showing business leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators across all industries how space can solve real-world problems.
Our approach goes beyond “telling people about space.” Instead, we meet leaders, entrepreneurs, and communities where they are, listen to the challenges they face, and show them how space-based solutions can help. By translating space enthusiasm into tangible, everyday benefits, we lower the barriers of skepticism and unfamiliarity. By framing discussions in their world, we seek first to understand. By focusing on the benefits to them, we avoid the siren’s song of the rocket, instead expanding the demand for space services.
The result is a rising tide of applications and partnerships that not only stimulate economic growth on Earth but also advance humanity toward permanent space settlement.
The Foundation scoured the landscape to identify the barriers that inhibit reaching the future of human space settlement, considered the resources and organizations addressing those barriers, and selected the gaps where we can have the largest impact. This process led to the strategic focus outlined above tackling these problems that slow humanity’s growth.
