9 Types of People Driving Our Space Future

In the previous article, we introduced the three families of space interest—Von Braunians, Saganites, and O'Neillians—as a useful way to understand why people care about space. Now, let's build upon that foundation by exploring a more detailed set of space advocate archetypes, providing additional clarity and depth to the conversation.
Marketing professionals frequently use customer archetypes—demographic and psychographic profiles—to better understand the various needs and motivations of their audience. These archetypes aren't rigid or exhaustive; rather, they're tools to help think through why different people value the same product or service in diverse ways.
Consider the simple example of a corner store selling milk. The product itself doesn't change, but the reasons customers buy it do: a young family uses it for nutrition, the bakery next door uses it as an ingredient, and a health-conscious individual might buy it for calcium. The motivations differ even though the product remains the same.
Applying this concept to space advocacy, we can identify nine distinct archetypes that represent common motivations for supporting and investing in space activities. This isn't an exhaustive categorization—science fiction enthusiasts, for example, aren't specifically addressed here—but it offers clarity for thinking about future-oriented space advocates. Current space users (such as existing satellite operators) aren't directly covered, as our focus is on those looking toward the potential and future of space.
The Nine Archetypes of Space Advocates:
Scientific Exploration Advocates: Driven by curiosity and discovery, they value space as humanity's ultimate laboratory for understanding the universe.
Economic Opportunity Advocates: Focused on commercial potential, they see space as a new frontier for growth, resources, and economic innovation.
National Security Advocates: Prioritize space as a critical domain for geopolitical stability, defense capabilities, and maintaining strategic advantages.
Environmental Stewardship Advocates: Emphasize the responsible and sustainable use of space, concerned about preserving Earth's orbit and beyond as part of our global ecosystem.
Philosophical/Spiritual Advocates: Seek deeper meaning and ethical reflection through the exploration of space, believing that understanding the cosmos enriches humanity's collective soul.
Political Prestige Advocates: Value space exploration as a means of demonstrating national leadership, inspiring patriotism, and showcasing technological prowess on a global stage.
Human Settlement Advocates: Committed to the long-term survival and expansion of humanity, viewing space colonization as essential to our species' future.
Technological Innovation Advocates: Enthusiastic about the technological advancements driven by the challenges of space, seeing these innovations as critical to societal progress.
Education and Public Engagement Advocates: Passionate about space as a tool for inspiring and educating future generations, leveraging interest in space exploration to foster STEM learning and broad public support.
These archetypes aren't mutually exclusive; individuals or organizations may embody elements of several at once. Understanding these diverse motivations can help us communicate more effectively, identify shared goals, and collaborate across communities. Ultimately, this framework enables the Space Frontier Foundation—and all of us who care about the future of space—to better serve, engage, and unite the broad spectrum of space advocates working toward a vibrant, accessible, and sustainable future beyond Earth.
